The mission of the Eastern Massachusetts Literacy Council (EMLC) is to assist adults in acquiring basic literacy in English. This organization provides free, individual and small group tutoring to adults who are native speakers of English and are not literate, as well as those adults who are learning English as another language.
EMLC is affiliated with Proliteracy Worldwide, an entity created by the recent merger of Laubach Literacy International and Literacy Volunteers of America. Disclosure Policy |

EMLC's need for volunteers is great. The most urgent need is for literacy tutors, but the volunteer opportunities are varied enough to suit almost any schedule and level of commitment.
- Literacy tutors: To be an EMLC tutor, you don't need past teaching experience. You don't need to know another language. You need only desire, commitment, and training.
- Ability-level assessor: Interview prospective learners and test their English literacy level or administer standardized assessments on an ongoing basis.
- Office support: Complete a two-hour shift once a week: filing, copying, telephoning, mailing, organizing books, etc.
- Conversation group leader: Facilitate group meetings in which advanced ESOL learners practice English conversation.
- Translators: Be on call to translate documents and/or talk with learners.
