Mission Statement

Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic, a nonprofit volunteer organization, is the nation's educational library serving people who cannot effectively read standard print because of visual impairment, dyslexia, or other physical disability. Our mission is to create opportunities for individual success by providing, and promoting the effective use of, accessible educational materials. Our vision is for all people to have equal access to the printed word.

Volunteer Opportunities

Whatever your area of interest or expertise, you will find that volunteering at Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic can be a very fulfilling experience. Our corps of volunteers has been an integral part of the organization's success for over 50 years. Our volunteer workforce is a unique and precious resource-the cornerstone of Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic. With RFB&D expecting to serve over 100,000 students with print disabilities in the coming year, we need your help.

RFB&D needs volunteers for functions vital to the success of the organization such as fundraising, public relations and recruitment.
  • Readers - narrate the text of a book and describe any visual elements such as charts, graphs, pictures, maps, or mathematical equations.
  • Directors - guide the reader through the recording session by operating recording equipment and making corrections to the recorded material when needed.
  • Bookmarkers - create a "pencil path" through books to be recorded, making notes throughout the text to guide readers through the sequence of charts, illustrations and footnotes.
  • Duplicators - copy tapes onto cassettes and keep records of each book recorded.
  • Checkers - review tapes before they are sent to students to ensure that RFB&D's high quality standards are met.
  • Office Assistants - help staff and other volunteers with office tasks including entering data, answering phones, or assembling information packets.
  • Orientation Leaders - provide prospective volunteers with information about RFB&D including a tour of a studio facility and an overview of operating procedures.
  • Speaker's Bureau Presenters - give informational presentations about RFB&D to promote the organization's services in local communities.
  • Educational Outreach Volunteers - assist with telephone and mail contacts and prepare training and information packets. Volunteers also represent RFB&D at local events and conferences.
