The Adult Learning Program of the Jamaica Plain Community Centers is a community-based adult education program dedicated to the empowerment of adults in advocating for themselves, their families and their communities through the provision of free basic education, ESOL and high school diploma programs. The ALP aims to offer adults the tools they need to achieve their career, educational and personal goals and to offer the services necessary in the relocation process for immigrants and refugees.
The Adult Learning Program (ALP) has provided free education to low and moderate income adults since 1978. Each year, we serve over 250 adults, from 18 years of age and up. We assist all students with achieving their educational, pre-vocational and vocational goals. Over 75 volunteers assist our learners each year.
Would you like to tutor students getting their GED or learning to read? Want to meet people from other cultures and help them learn English? It takes just two hours a week! Community members are trained on-site as volunteers through the Commonwealth Literacy Campaign and work one-on-one or in small groups with ESOL or ABE students. Others assist in the administration of our program. Tutors volunteer one day or evening a week.
