The Greater Boston Food Bank is the largest hunger-relief organization in New England, and one of the largest food banks in the country. We distribute 20 million pounds of food annually to hundreds of local agencies. We are a trusted and efficient resource for these local food pantries, soup kitchens, day-care centers, youth programs, senior centers, and homeless and residential shelters, providing the food they need to feed the hungry. We distribute so much food that some people even call us "the mother of all food banks."
Founded in 1981, The Food Bank is part of the America's Second Harvest national network, the nation's largest hunger-relief organization. We employ 55 people and utilize the services of 10,500 volunteers annually to acquire, inspect, sort, warehouse, and distribute enormous quantities of food. Day and night, weekdays and weekends, our 60,000 square-foot facility, loading docks and fleet of trucks are put to work to feed hungry people.
Volunteers at The Greater Boston Food Bank are making a difference every day. Through their efforts, The Food Bank helps provide more than 15 million meals per year to approximately 283,000 people throughout eastern Massachusetts.
The Food Bank would simply not be able to feed those in need without the over 38,500 hours its 10,500 volunteers donate every year. That amounts to $400,000 in labor costs. Volunteers include students, seniors, businesspeople, church members and others who help us separate, sort, inspect and package food. Volunteer opportunities are available six days a week, with flexible hours, mornings, afternoons, and evenings.
