ABCD, Inc. (Action for Boston Community Development) is a private non-profit human services agency providing opportunities for upward mobility to hundreds of thousands of Greater Boston residents through innovative, quality programs and services since 1962. LearningWorks is ABCD's workforce development center, offering a variety of education, training and support services for low-income adults. The center is also a resource for employers seeking qualified staff or staff training opportunities. LearningWorks facilities include two computer labs and a self-directed resource room with automated job banks and resume writing programs.
Volunteer tutors at LearningWorks support their Adult Basic Education and GED programs. Volunteer tutors' work is very important for two major reasons. First, volunteer tutors' commitment provides emotional support and reassurance to the students, who feel that they are not struggling by themselves. The volunteer tutors' willingness to work out of their own time also motivates the students to learn. Second, volunteer tutors can answer students' questions, thus freeing the teacher to cover more students and materials.
Training sessions for tutors are scheduled periodically throughout the year. The latest training session is scheduled for the last week of September 2005.
